New production studio for a film & television costume designer with luxury residential apartments above.
Commercial and residential, new construction
An established costume designer in Toronto's film and television industry envisioned a new three-storey building on Dundas Street West near Bathurst Street wherein the ground floor would house her production studio and the two upper floors would be occupied as large luxury apartments.
Conceived with a factory image in mind, the building is simple and robust, with polished terrazzo-type concrete floors and open floor plans with long sightlines. The facade features three diaphanous friezes standing forward of the front window wall, made of CNC cut aluminium and providing a patterned shade for the interior rooms, while also announcing the building to the street.
A new infill building, the Veiled Factory is sited on a long and narrow site between two existing buildings typical of Dundas Street West. It will be among the first new buildings on the strip since the revitalization of Dundas Street West beginning in the early 2000's.
